Resources for Your Time #2

Psalm 27:1 - The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Seek First the Kingdom of God
There are a lot of unknowns right now. You are probably unsure about your future physical health, your future job position, your future financial status, your future family vacation, or simply your future trip to the grocery store (Will there be toilet paper?). But really, when you think about it, what's new? It's a good thing as followers of Jesus we have permission and a call to not be anxious about tomorrow. Jesus drops a wisdom bomb when he says, "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble" (Matt. 6:34). Jesus is in no way implying that we not plan for the future, strategize for potential scenarios, or apply wisdom to unknown possibilities. None of us want to be like the simple-minded fool in Prov. 27:12: "The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it."

No, Jesus is basically saying two things:
First, Jesus is concerned about HOW you engage today and tomorrow. By the Holy Spirit of Wisdom, we CAN be a people who trust God! So you don't have to give into fear or anxiety. Let love and wisdom be your determining factors in making decisions. (As a side note, we do need to self-reflectively realize our tendency to call fear, "wisdom.")
Second, Jesus wants us to keep the main thing the main thing. "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness." No matter what happens in this life, we know that following Jesus means we keep our hopes and joys fixed on the resurrection and new creation to come. With that unshakable joy and hope, we lean into loving our present world extravagantly and point everyone to the kingdom of God with boldness, wisdom and grace.

Our God is in Control!
Here's a quote of encouragement from Charles Spurgeon about God's Sovereignty:
“There is no attribute of God more comforting to his children than the doctrine of Divine Sovereignty. Under the most adverse circumstances, in the most severe troubles, they believe that Sovereignty hath ordained their afflictions, that Sovereignty overrules them, and that Sovereignty will sanctify them all.”
